A New Era of Airport Operation in India from the traditional concept of Government owned, built and controlled, has been evolved by the incarnation of Cochin International Airport. The idea to float an Airport under Public Private Partnership has been mooted by then District Collector of Ernakulum Mr. VJ Kurian, IAS,today stands as a path breaker in this field in our country. No doubt, there were stiff opposition from many fields but the strong will of Politicians and Officials along with the ardent cooperation from the common public and Non- Resident Indians made this Airport to stand as a Golden and shining example of Airport under Public Private Partnership now commonly called PPP.
Cochin International Airport situated in 1250 acres of land, the smooth acquisition of which made a history in our country and still a study/research subject in Harvard University. The modus operandi for acquisition of land is praised by many experts including World Bank. Nedumbassery, a calm and tiny village near Aluva today boasts of having an Airport with International standards and the fourth largest in India in terms of its International Passenger volume. As far as Infrastructure facility is concerned, it is in the seventh largest position among other Airports in India.
Within this short span of 15 years of its existence, CIAL, made many records of its own. Now, CIAL is witnessing 181 International Aircraft movements and 232 Domestic Aircraft movements on weekly basis. CIAL is carrying 11000 passengers per day and more than 33000 people are visiting Airport.
International Terminal of CIAL is sprawling in 4.78 lakhs Sq Feet area with a Passenger Handling Capacity of 1200 incoming and 1200 outgoing passengers per hour. It houses FOREX counters, Meet & Greet Hall, Pre paid Taxi Counters, Guest Rooms, Restaurant, Medical Assistance, Banks, Food Courts, Snack Bar counters, Prayer Rooms, Launches, Tourist Assistance, and Shopping Arcade etc.
The Domestic Terminal with 100000 Sq Ft area and passenger Handling capacity of 400 incoming and 400 outgoing passengers per hour. It has Airline Offices, Meet and Greet Hall, Prayer hall, restaurant, Shopping Arcade and a spacious air-conditioned departure lounge etc.
Shri. V J Kurian, IAS has taken charge as Managing Director, Cochin International Airport, on 10th June 2011 . History of CIAL is the history of Shri. V J Kurian, who had executed this dream Airport project through public-private partnership overcoming all the obstacles which came in the way of the project. He had set up the CIAL model which is considered as one of the most sought after model for infrastructure development in the state. The setting up of Cochin Airport by Shri. V J Kurian was a path breaking moment in the history of Civil Aviation in the Country.
Prior to this assignment Shri. V J Kurian had served as the Chairman of Spices Board, MD of Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala, and as District Collector of Alappey and Ernakulam.
Highlights of CIAL:
- First-of-its-kind airport developed under the PPP model, where Airport users (mainly NRI investors) joined hands with the Government of Kerala and the airport service providers to build an International Airport
- Spread over 1300 acres - 800 acres utilised for Airport Facilities and 500 acres is planned for Aviation and City Infrastructure
- Wide Investor base - 11,000 individual investors from 30 countries
- Developed at a total cost of around Rs.2,830 million
- Present employee strength of CIAL is around 515
- Commenced operations in 1999
